Option A: Filing My Taxes
Follow the directions below to get a basic understanding and feel about filing taxes. It is essential to as least see some of these terms and their meaning.
Step 1: Open a Google Doc to research and answer the following questions:
1. What does it mean to be a "dependent" on taxes?
2. What are exemptions?
3. What is a tax deduction?
4. What is a tax credit?
5. What is AGI(Adjusted Gross Income)?
Step 2: go to here!
Step 3: Find and click on Monica Lindo: Simulation 7A: Completing a Tax Return as a Dependent" (I chose Monica because she demonstrates the most common type of tax return that students between the ages of 18-24 tend to file.)
Step 4: Take your time on this section - actually open the documents and click on as much as you can! Follow the directions given to you on the website and complete the tax return.
Step 5: Once you are done:
1. Type these questions and answer the questions on the bottom of your doc: Was this helpful? What is your favorite animal?
2. Share your doc with me at [email protected]

Option B: Student Loans
Follow the directions below to gain an understanding about student loans, if you are thinking about college. While student loans are a different beast, they can help provide insight into other types of loans.
Step 1: go to HERE!
Step 2: Open the document below and complete the questions. Save this document (either to your H Drive or Google Drive).
Step 3: Email me at [email protected] with answers to the following questions:
1. What questions/concerns do you still have about student loans?
2. What college are you planning on attending? (If you're not going to college, tell me your plans after school here)
- Take a look at the college of your choice at some point; look at the website for their financial aid information.

Option C: Stock Exchange and Portfolios
Follow the directions below to get more information about stock trading and stock portfolio building.
Step 1: go to Steps to Building a Portfolio
- Read about creating and maintaining a successful stock portfolio. Warning!: This section get a little jargon-heavy but take your time and look up words you don't know. Let me know if you have clarifying questions - but I have faith you can get through this on your own!
Step 2: Answer the following questions in Google Doc:
1. What different kinds of stocks can one choose from?
2. What are two things that you should look for and consider in stocks? (hint: starts with an "o" and an "r")
3. Which elements should you consider when selecting bonds?
4. What are mutual funds? What is a mutual funds greatest asset?
5. How are ETFs grouped? How is this a benefit?
Step 3. Now create a portfolio! On the same document, create an investment portfolio (mix of bonds and mutual funds? High risk or low risk stocks?) for one of these two people:
1. Grandpa Bob: He is 66 years old, and looking to retire but needs more investment income to live during retirement. He has worked for the past 45 years but he will only get 50% of his working income through Social Security. Create an investment portfolio that makes sense for Grandpa's needs.
2. College kid Greg: Greg is 21 years old, and thinking about some investments. Greg likes to take some financial risks, after all he has the time to recover from any potential losses. He also wants to experience up-and-coming companies/markets. He hopes to create an investment plan for retirement later on. Create an investment portfolio that works for Greg's needs.
Step 4: Take that portfolio and put it into action!
- Visit this page!
- Click on "Register as Student"
- Fill out the form and register. Make sure to change Practice Portfolio Currency to US Dollars. Use your Jeffco Email so you don't get spam mail!
-Play around with the website and invest in potential companies.
Step 5: You have $1Million to invest for your client (either Grandpa or Greg). Research some companies and start investing that money. You can leave this page open and check in towards the end of class to see how your stocks are doing. You can give your neighbor a high five if you made some money!
